University of Huddersfield collaborated with FSLGA and University of Colombo to conduct a consultative meeting aimed at supporting the development of Sendai Framework ‘Words into action” implementation Guide for DRR Governance at the local level.
Good governance has to be at the very heart of DRR means and outcomes. A shift towards governing risks with a proactive and forward- looking perspective will be the key. This requires decentralized structures with strong framework to support policy implementation, with a clear understanding of responsibilities, and clear incentives towards action, as well as mechanisms to monitor progress, facilitate implementation and promote accountability. Consequently, Disaster risk management at the local level has to be a key element in any viable national DRR strategy. Therefore, the aim of this meeting was the development of a Sendai Framework “Words into action” Implementation Guide for DRR Governance which is focused at the Local Level.
Prof. Dilanthi Amarathunga (Chair person in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management) and Prof.Siri Hettige (Senior Lecturer in University of Colombo) conducted the meeting at the Kingsbury Residences on 10th July 2017 with the participation of stakeholders from both public and private sector who shared their views and expertise.
